MORE THAN CONQUORERS SERMON STARTER
This past week has been extremely stressful for Me. Monday evening at 6 pm 3 lightning strikes took out my DSL internet WiFi system. I attempted working with the company for days, finally giving up on Wednesday. I approached Verizon about converting my internet system to Verizon Wireless. It was more stress. I felt like a blind man in an unfamiliar room. Finally, yesterday we turned the equipment on and we are back on with a completely wireless land line, landline home office phones android telephone and WiFi system. I feel exhausted, but am an overcomer. TR. In 2014 NIKE had it's 50th Anniversary since its origin. Since that humble beginning in a small town in Oregon more than 50 years ago, Nike has taken the world by storm. Today, it is a 34 billion dollar revenue-producing, world-wide company. Nike produces more than 15 billion $$$$ just in North America. It has more than 1100 stores world-wide in more than 40 countries. This status symbol of footware is the special name-brand, high-top athletic shoe which often costs about $150 and has certain designs and colors incorporated into it. The popular brand has chosen the name "Nike" to represent its shoe and sports clothing lines. The word has an interesting history. "Nike" comes from the Greek word, "Nik-ah-o" which means literally, "Victory", or "He Conquers", or "He overcomes". This is a strong word of victory which implies that the victor wiped out his opponents. The company which selected this word knew of the strength of its meaning. This same word or derivatives of it appear often in the pages of the Bible. Especially in Revelation chapters 2 and 3. The words "he that overcomes" have their origin in the Greek word "Nike". Since the Bible speaks often about Overcomers we ought to pay attention to who these overcomers are and how we can recognize them and be like them. MORE THAN CONQUORERS 1 John 5:1-5

34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Johnny Fulton was run over by a car at the age of three. He suffered crushed hips, broken ribs, a fractured skull, and compound fractures in his legs. It did not look as if he would live. But he would not give up. In fact, he later ran the half- mile in less than two minutes. Walt Davis was totally paralyzed by polio when he was nine years old, but he did not give up. He became the Olympic high jump champion in 1952. Shelly Mann was paralyzed by polio when she was five years old, but she would not give up. She eventually claimed eight different swimming records for the U.S. and won a gold medal at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. In 1938, Karoly Takacs, a member of Hungary's world-champion pistol shooting team and sergeant in the army, lost his right hand when a grenade he was holding exploded. But Takacs did not give. up. He learned to shoot left-handed and won gold medals in the 1948 and 1952 Olympics. Lou Gehrig was such a clumsy ball player that the boys in his neighborhood would not let him play on their team. But he was committed. He did not give up. Eventually, his name was entered into baseball's Hall of Fame. Woodrow Wilson could not read until he was ten years old. But he was a committed person. He became the twenty-eighth President of the United States.
At the age of seven, he had to go to work to help support his family. At nine, his mother died. At twenty-two, he lost his job as a store clerk. At twenty-three, he went into debt and became a partner in a small store. At twenty-six, his partner died leaving him a huge debt. By the age of thirty-five, he had been defeated twice when running for a seat in Congress. At the age of thirty-seven, he won the election. At thirty-nine, he lost his reelection bid. At forty- one, his four-year-old son died. At forty-two, he was rejected for a land officer role. At forty-five, he ran for the Senate and lost. At forty-seven, he was defeated for the nomination for Vice President. At forty-nine, he ran for Senate again and lost again. At the age of fifty-one, he was elected President of the United States. During his second term of office, he was assassinated. But his name lives on among the greats in U.S. history--Abraham Lincoln. Heaven Bound Living, Knofel Stanton, Standard, 1989, p. 43-44.
